What is it about?

We explore how social contextual information shared by other visitors can impact the museum experience of museum-goers. To do so, we investigated the elements of visitor-oriented social information and designed mobile guidance applications providing this information. Next, we observed the behavior and responses of visitors to different types of social informational cues.

Why is it important?

Understanding how social informational cues affect museum visitors can help museums create more engaging exhibits or guidance media and foster positive visitors' museum experience. We found that visitors who received social cues had a more positive museum experience. They were more likely to engage with the exhibits themselves, spend more time in the museum, and feel a sense of connection with other visitors.

Perspectives

In my opinion, transcending the mere objectives of museum planning and evaluation, it is imperative to ponder over the medium of captivatingly showcasing the gathered data to the visitors. I tried to investigate the possibility of enriching visitors' museum journey by presenting the amassed visitor data back to them as social contextual information.
