What is it about?

This paper shows that there are five typical scenarios in which the commitment to a new organization may develop over time: (1) learning to love (a slow starter ending up with high commitment); (2) honeymoon-hangover; (3) perfect match (high start, high ending), (4) mismatch (low start, low ending), and moderate match (high start, but moderate ending where the fit with the organization is "good enough" for the time being.

Why is it important?

Thinking about onboarding in terms of scenarios of development helps managers find answers to what is going on, as in: "what story are we in?" By recognizing a string of events as typical scenario (e.g., a mismatch scenario), one can intervene on a very early basis. No other method allows for interventions this early in the process!

Perspectives

This paper defines my passion as a researcher: finding scenarios and explanations for why people change. It has also led to the develop of an app (www.en-gager.com). Via this app employees can track, trace and predict the development of their commitments (or any other critical success factor).
