What is it about?

This research highlights that an organization’s efforts to boost creativity will be futile unless the dark side of bosses’ behaviour is managed. We examined how abusive bosses may destroy employee creativity and identified factors that should be considered for improving employee creativity in the workplace.

Why is it important?

We found that abusive bosses affect creativity as their unfair behaviour makes their subordinates feel distressed. However, distributive and procedural justice in the workplace provides contextual conditions that buffer this harmful process and may help employees to cope with the psychological distress triggered by abusive bosses. The preventative importance of workplace justice must be reinforced and strengthened through management development programs.

Perspectives

Organizations should focus on improving fairness in outcomes and ensure transparency of procedures that lead to specific outcomes.
