What is it about?

The UK Higher Education sector has undergone an equality revolution since the introduction of the Equality Act in 2010 by the UK Government. While there have been great strives and research in the area of gender equality, there has been little in the way of research around sexual orientation. This article explores the challenges and opportunities faced by LGBT* staff in UK HE and looks at how self-organisation through Staff Networks has developed in recent years.

Why is it important?

The authors presented to the annual conference of the Association of University Administrators (AUA) in March 2015. The authors have put this paper together to suppliment their presentation. It is timely given the 5th anniversary of the Equality Act and the equalisation of same-sex marriage in the UK.

Perspectives

I hope this article provides people with a better understanding of the work going on in UK HE surrounding LGBT* equality and provides people with a better understanding and best practice to take to their own institutions.
