What is it about?

We investigated the prediction of initial alliance on treatment progress in the following course of couple therapy

Why is it important?

As recommended within couple therapy research , alliance was measured on three levels; the individual's as well as the couple's joint perception of alliance with the therapist, each partner's perception of the alliance between the spouse and the therapist, and the couple's assessment of alliance with each other. We found that the two first of these alliance dimensions predicted the slopes of outcome measures.

Perspectives

This publication adds to the litterature on alliance research in couple therapy. Addressing the association between process (alliance) and frequent outcome measurements during treatment (progress), it contributes to the litterature on mechanisms of change, something that is of great clincial relevance.
