What is it about?

This study offers a comparative analysis of postgraduate nurse education between Indonesia and Australia, exploring the differences and similarities in educational offerings, regulation, and specialty practice standards. With interviews from 65 stakeholders and an extensive literature review, the research highlights that while both countries have structured educational systems, Australia boasts a more diverse range of postgraduate opportunities, including nurse practitioner roles and graduate entry programs. Indonesia, however, has unique graduation requirements like mandatory publications for masters and doctoral students. This comparison sheds light on the potential for future developments and collaborations in nurse education between the two countries.

Why is it important?

Our research stands out for its comprehensive comparison of postgraduate nursing education between two geographically close yet distinct countries. By focusing on higher education systems, educational offerings, and specialist practice standards, we provide valuable insights into the evolution of nursing education and the opportunities for enhancing quality care delivery through specialized training. This study is timely, considering the global push towards more advanced and specialized nursing roles to meet the increasing complexities of healthcare delivery.

Perspectives

Engaging in this comparative study has been an enlightening experience, revealing the nuanced differences and potential for mutual learning between Indonesian and Australian nurse education systems. The discovery of Indonesia's unique requirement for academic publication prior to graduation from postgraduate programs particularly struck me, highlighting a distinct approach to integrating research and practice. This work underscores the importance of international collaboration in nursing education, fostering a global exchange of ideas and practices to advance the nursing profession and healthcare outcomes worldwide.
