Why is it important?

The chapter considers problems with the type of accounting information system (AIS) typically used in capital budgeting. It identifies issue with the use of spreadsheets and the lack of formal systems for evaluating or integrating non-financial information.

Perspectives

This chapter also explores the emergence of integrated reporting and the challenges for AIS to incorporate integrated thinking into strategic investment appraisal and proposes a new meaning for capital investment and incorporates all capitals besides financial capital. Finally, it considers how AIS practice could develop to bring capital investment appraisal techniques up-to-date tackle modern day decision-making in organisations.
