What is it about?
Translation techniques, or trechs, are shown in this chapter, not as a recipe, nor as an endorsement of an objective mechanical way of translating, but to promote translators’ creativity, adaptability, flexibility and their ability to find the best possible solution for each challenge and to appreciate such efforts in other translators’ work, not as a prescription for translating mechanically and objectively. Trechs are included here because of their popularity in translator training and, most importantly, as a complement to the idea of problems and solutions presented in Chapter 8, which we find theoretically more consistent. The goal is to increase student awareness and promote creativity as a pedagogical target for improving translator competence. A list of possible trechs enhances awareness of the broad range of possible solutions, providing broadly accepted labels for some of them, and encourages translators and trainees to be bolder in their own versions rather than cling to solutions that are perceived to be safe, mechanical, objective.
