What is it about?
Latinx teacher candidates, often preparing to become bilingual or ESl teachers, are the product of subtractive inequitable education they experienced as English learners. Border Pedagogies for teacher preparation are research based approaches for teacher educators of Latinx teacher candidates to promote strong professional identities by deconstructing their own experiences and the negative effects of educational policies for language minority students. Strong professional identities will enable them to critically examine their practices, their educational settings and their sociocultural contexts to act with agency and to advocate for their students thereby tranforming education in positive ways.

Why is it important?
In an effort to diversify the teacher workforce and to prepare these teachers to work with the growing population of English language learners, it is important to help them overcome the effects of the subtractive and inadequate education they received as students so they can advocate for their students and transform their students learning experiences in positive ways.
