What is it about?
Through discussions and reflections, this chapter follows pre-service teachers as they begin to critically examine Paulo Freire's 'banking' concept of education in the light of their own experiences as students and educators. Participants reflect on Freire's ideas of consciousness raising and liberation in two Brazilian programmes based on his philosophy, Projeto Semear and Projeto Axé.

Why is it important?
The results show how these future teachers perceive the oppressive realities of traditional education systems, which helps prepare them to work appropriately with their future culturally and linguistically diverse students.
Perspectives
Working with Amanda Montes on this chapter allowed me to connect my work in teacher education with Paulo Freire's ideas and two inspiring Brazilian educational projects.
