What is it about?

Cyclodextrin derived "linear" maltooligosaccharides which are able to form so-called inclusion or host-guest complexes with active pharmaceutical molecules.

Why is it important?

Unlike cyclodextrins the open chain structure gives higher flexibility for the host molecule. The higher flexibility allows the larger degree of freedom in the guest structure. The formed host-guest complex might be more or less stable in solution or solid state than the parent cyclic version. Linear maltooligomers are completely water soluble, usually non toxic molecules which can be digested by alpha-amylases or they can be cleared from a living organism without chemical transformation..

Perspectives

Short chain maltooligosaccharides are more more flexible than cyclodextrins and able to form even more stable inclusion complexes than cyclodextrins. The synthesis of maltooligosaccharides from the common, commercially available cyclodextrins is feasible and easily scalable.
