What is it about?

This paper presents a descriptive overview of China’s Outward FDI including the regional distribution and the main industrial distribution. Based on some reasonable assumptions, we respectively estimated host and home CO2 emissions of 34 host countries caused by China’s OFDI. The period examined in this study spans from 2000 to 2011. CO2 emission transfer of China’s outward FDI can be quantified by the difference between host and home CO2 emissions.

Why is it important?

As the world’s largest primary energy consumer and greenhouse gas emitter, undoubtedly, China has a critical role in global CO2 emission mitigation. China’s outward FDI has continuously gained momentum, but CO2 emissions caused by the outward FDI have not been given its due attention.

Perspectives

It is indicated that China’s outward FDI contributed to global CO2 emission reduction. The cumulative global CO2 emission reduction achieved by China’s outward FDI was 40454.2 kt from 2000 to 2011.
