What is it about?

This is a letter that resume the work "N-acetyl cysteine reverts the proinflammatory state induced by cigarette smoke extract in lung Calu-3 cells" . Redox Biol. 2018 Jun;16:294-302. doi: 10.1016/j.redox.2018.03.006.

Why is it important?

The results show an impressive stimulation of cytoplasmic ROS upon cigarette extract exposure, accompanied by development of a proinflammatory state.

Perspectives

The mechanism behind these effects is unknown yet but we believe that the reduction in the CFTR expression and activity might be involved, since the Cl- accumulation in the presence of a reduced CFTR activity is known to induce IL-1b secretion induced by Cl-.
