What is it about?
Microbial consortia (i.e. microbes and microbial-associated materials) represent a source of macronutrients that includes proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates. Polyunsaturated fatty acids, essential amino acids, and considerable amounts of vitamins can also be found in certain microbial consortia.

Why is it important?
Aquaculture has become the solution to the growing demand for food from aquatic organisms and has grown from 1 million tons (MT) in 1950 to more than 66MT in 2012 (90.7MT including plants), which represents more than 40% of the total production of aquatic feed products.
