What is it about?

The site of hundreds of birds coming to drink and bathe at water points in arid zones is an amazing phenomenon. We show that species richness and abundance are higher closer to water points placed for livestock in this arid zone environment.

Why is it important?

The placement of watering points in the landscape is shaping bird distribution. Bird persistence in the landscape is now intricately tied to the provision of water for birds in the arid zone.

Perspectives

This was a Conservation Biology masters project by the lead author, Sal, supervised by Susan Cunningham. I advised on study design and did the stats. There are still many unanswered questions regarding when, why and how birds are using these resources.
