What is it about?

This study explores what factors encourage doctors and dentists to work in remote areas of Indonesia and how to improve their retention. Using a Discrete Choice Experiment (DCE), 158 medical professionals across 15 provinces were surveyed to understand their job preferences. The findings show that priority for government scholarships, security guarantees from local governments, and housing facilities were the most attractive incentives. Additionally, access to medical facilities and financial incentives also played a role in doctors' and dentists’ decisions to stay. The study suggests that a mix of financial and non-financial incentives is necessary to retain healthcare workers in underserved regions, ensuring better healthcare access for remote communities.

Why is it important?

Indonesia faces a shortage of doctors and dentists in remote areas, affecting healthcare services in rural communities. If medical professionals leave, patients struggle to access basic medical care. This study provides evidence-based recommendations for policymakers to create better incentives and policies that encourage healthcare workers to stay, ultimately improving healthcare equity across the country.

Perspectives

Retaining doctors and dentists in remote areas requires more than just financial incentives—they need career development opportunities, safety assurances, and adequate medical facilities. Healthcare workers want to feel supported and valued in their roles. This study highlights the urgent need for stronger policies and structured support systems to ensure that rural communities receive consistent and quality healthcare services.
