5α-dihydroprogesterone concentrations and synthesis in non-pregnant mares

What is it about?

The 5α-reduced progesterone metabolite, 5α-dihydroprogesterone (DHP) is a potent, additional progestin synthesized in the placenta, that can replace progesterone and support pregnancy, as it does throughout the second half of equine gestation. This is the first report showing DHP is synthesized from luteal progesterone in the systemic circulation of non-pregnant, cyclic mares, and is present at concentrations known to stimulate the equine endometrium, adding to the effects of progesterone.
