What is it about?

This paper explores the portrayal of Germans from Russia in German mass media, since the reactions of several people from this group towards a minor criminal case in Berlin made them suspicious: do (German) migrants from Russia still trust more into Russian mass media and politics? This question repeatedly rose on the eve of the federal elections in Germany of 2017, but eventually turned out as helpful towards the leading German Russian lobby organization.

Why is it important?

Apart from studies on media usage of Germans from Russia, this is the only study that deals with their portrayal in the latest past, analyzing each 300 German and Russian documentaries and articles from the leading TV channels and newspapers.

Perspectives

The paper draws a nuanced picture of the public image of Germans from Russia. This image reveals the little knowledge about one of Germany's largest migrant populations and made me wonder, why it is so little and whether this fact applies to other migrant groups in Germany. Both questions inspired my to my dissertation project on memory cultures in immigration countries.
