What is it about?

Since sexual crimes have a significant impact on society, preventing recidivism is critical. We have developed a Japanese version of the Static-99 that assesses a sex offender's risk of future recidivism with only 10 questions. The Static-99 is a risk assessment tool widely used around the world. The manner of sexual offenses is greatly influenced by socio-cultural factors. Unlike in the West, sexual offenses in Japan are characterized by touching strangers and taking peeping photos in crowded places such as trains and stations. We administered the Japanese version of the Static-99 to 164 sex offenders and observed whether or not they reoffended during one year. We found that the Japanese version of the Static-99 accurately predicted recidivism approximately 76% of the time.
