What is it about?

All antipsychotic medication result in weight gain. Most likely becuase antipsychtics are associated with an increase in appetite. In this study the antipsychotic naif patients showed more weight compared to patients who switched their antipsychotic medication. antipsychotic patients are general younger and therfore apparently more at risk for weight gain.

Why is it important?

That antipsychotic naif patient have more weight gain, shows that the medication is a contributing factor. Becoming overweight or suffering from obesity at younger age and suffering from mental health problems, is extra complicated.

Perspectives

This studies shows the urgency for lifestyle measures and cooperation with patients in choosing th right antipsychotic medication.
