What is it about?

This study examines the impact of a breath-focused mindfulness practice versus a self-compassion mindfulness practice in college undergraduates using multiple measurements. We look at self-report measures of mood and emotion, brain activity, and grades.

Why is it important?

People can feel overwhelmed with trying to fit one more thing into their schedules or classes, but this study suggests that incorporating 10 minutes of practice a week, particularly self-compassion practices, can benefit mood, emotion regulation, and classroom performance in students.

Perspectives

Doing intervention work is challenging, as is reflected in the sample size of this study. However, the data are encouraging and support a broader body of literature that is finding unique effects for compassion practices that go beyond the effects found with more attention-focused mindfulness practices.
