What is it about?

To date, dementia cannot be cured. However, a growing body of research suggests that risk for dementia is, in part, modifiable by reducing risk factors such as, for example, high blood pressure, physical inactivity, diabetes or social isolation. It is not clear whether these research findings are known among the general population in Germany.

Why is it important?

Due to population ageing, the number of people living with dementia will increase. Knowledge about factors that influence dementia risk is crucial to engage in brain-healthy behaviors. We investigated the current state of knowledge about established risk and protective factors for dementia among the older general public in Germany and identified areas where more information for the older general public is needed.
