What is it about?

We have used a new personalised learning technology, that is able to tailor study for each student to their individual needs. In doing so, we have students have engaged more in their study, learnt more, and this learning has been retained for longer periods of time post class.

Why is it important?

With growing class sizes, increasing diversity of prior learning, and new hybrid learning models, students need personalised support that educators used to be able to provide in the classroom. Technology can allow for personal learning paths to be developed for large cohorts of students, and be delivered in new, and engaging ways. In doing so this may offer new solutions to challenges facing student learning and retention.

Perspectives

In addition to the quantitative data we collected about the impact adaptive learning had on student learning, the qualitative data from surveys and reflections provides insight into how students use these kinds of technologies. Key is ease of use, engaging style, having access on their devices, and what impact these approaches have on their other study habits. It is a complex issue, and we still need to do more to understand the full impact.
