What is it about?

Cigarillos are popular among young people. Young adults perceived that cigarillos can be as harmful to health as cigarettes. This study highlights the importance of understanding when and demographic factors of when young adults start using cigarillos using the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study, a United States representative study. This study first looks at the age at which young adult naïve users begin using cigarillos. For example, by age 26, 15% initiated ever cigarillo use.

Why is it important?

It is important to understand when young adults 18-25 years old start using cigarillo to know the increased risk of addiction and health problems later in life for each year of earlier initiation of this tobacco product.

Perspectives

This study also found that certain factors, such as being male, being Non-Hispanic Black or Hispanic, and using other tobacco products, were associated with starting to use cigarillos at a younger age.
