What is it about?

Adult Patients with swallowing problems face difficulties in taking tablets, capsules or other conventional oral medicines. Therefore, there is a need to develop oral dissolving films for easy administration, especially for psychiatric patients. We used natural and inexpensive polymers for example Okra biopolymer in combination with HPMC, a semisynthetic polymer to produce films that dissolve immediately on tongue.

Why is it important?

Natural polymers are economic, safe and bio-compatible. They are fully capable of replacing expensive and toxic synthetic polymers in drug delivery devices. One such example is Okra biopolymer, which is obtained from Okra pods, a vegetable native to Pakistan. This also provides an opportunity for socio-economic buildup of local farmers.

Perspectives

I am glad to share a collaborative research article for the readers who are in pharmaceutical industry and in academia with a keen interest in pharmaceutical research.
