What is it about?

New mothers are faced with many changes after delivery. Some may have complications or medical concerns in the first ten days, and usually seek medical attention through the emergency department. This study looked at the reasons for why new mothers visited the emergency department.

Why is it important?

Understanding why new mothers visit the emergency department within a period of ten days after delivery can help reduce these visits. In our study, it showed that the two most common reasons for visit were abdominal pain and wound issues. If there is a way to ensure appropriate pain management or have good follow up for wound management, then it can reduce the need to visit the emergency department.

Perspectives

We hope this article provides the impetus to ensure new mothers are given the appropriate follow up and avoid coming to the emergency department. By identifying the common reasons for the visit and recognizing that many patients are discharged home, a clinic setting (either Family Medicine or Obstetrics) may be the more appropriate setting to address these patient concerns.
