What is it about?

Caco-2 and HT29-MTX are two human cell lines helping us to mimic the small intestine. These model shows typical characteristics of the native tissue when it comes to structure, cellular composition and well as physiological features like glucose and chloride transport or reactions to bacterial toxins.

Why is it important?

Models of specific organs can help us to better understand mechanisms of the body. Doing so using cell cultures reduces the amount of animals used for scientific questions.

Perspectives

Generating of animal-free methods are mandatory fur future research. Therefore, laboratory models should display specific features of the investigated organ. This will help us to address future questions of daily life without usage of laboratory animals.
