What is it about?
Understanding local people's responses to conservation management options is important in conservation decision-making. Our study developed and validated user-friendly indices to quantify attitudes and how they relate to various socioeconomic and environmental factors. We find that people's location of residence, age, number of income sources, gender, and conservation benefit influenced such responses.

Why is it important?
Using indices can assist conservation practitioners and decision-makers to prioritise resources, eliciting local people's support for conservation programmes and support poverty alleviation programmes.
Perspectives
I hope this article finds use among conservation and development actors and policymakers grappling with the quantification of people's perspectives in conservation research.
