What is it about?

The indiscriminate use of testosterone has increased. However, testosterone has been associated with damage to the cardiovascular system. We have shown that after a myocardial infarction, testosterone could worsen pathological hypertrophy

Why is it important?

Testosterone is the main androgen of male circulation. It is responsible for the development and maintenance of sexual characteristics in males and the anabolic state of tissues. However Testosterone is associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease. he androgen level reaches a peak in men around the age of 30, after which, testosterone levels decrease at a rate of 1–2% per year. In the last two decades there has been a significant increase in the number of prescriptions for testosterone replacement therapy in elderly men. However, there are few data about the risks or benefits to the cardiovascular system of hormone replacement in men with a decline in age-related androgen levels. The American Society of Endocrinology and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have issued reports about the potential increased cardiovascular risks associated with testosterone replacement therapy and encouraged further investigations in this area.

Perspectives

Knowing more about the effects of testosterone on the cardiovascular system is very important to elucidate the damages that could be caused by using high doses of testosterone. Writing this article made me happy, and I also had very special co-authors who did a great job.
