What is it about?

We show that an active mattress, of a particular design, not only has a positive effect on the health of skin in contact with the support surface but, with long-term use, it also affects blood flow in the whole body and vascular health in general. This was done with a simple and repeatable clinical protocol (MARJON SUPPORT SURFACE PROTOCOL) that can be applied for evaluating benefits of any support surface.

Why is it important?

This study is important because the findings can be applied to many diseases where endothelial dysfunction is implicated. It is known that COVID-19 related pneumonia is linked to endothelial dysfunction. The study suggests that active mattress use can be beneficial for people with: foot ulcers and peripheral arterial disease, hypercholesterolaemia, heart failure, exercise capacity, diabetic neuropathy and hypertension.

Perspectives

This article builds on the research by Goosens, Rithalia, Rothenberger, Bergstrand, Gunther, Clarke and Keane, into the effect an active mattress can have on blood flow and health. Their work was truly creative in the field of sleep health science. The current work is a collaboration between industry and sports science; the discovery has major possibilities for improving the health and wellbeing of people with a variety of requirements. Use of this mattress might have a wide range of applications where the promotion of blood flow and improved endothelial function would be beneficial.
