Knowledge of local antimicrobial resistance patterns, via antibiograms, can help prescribers select appropriate empirical antibiotics for common infections. This Systematic review provides evidence that utilizing antibiograms may improve appropriateness of antibiotic prescribing.

Why is it important?

This was the first study to synthesize and evaluate literature surrounding the use of antibiograms as antimicrobial stewardship tools. Prior to this study, little was known about the clinical impact of antibiograms.
