What is it about?

Pain assessment is a critical aspect of patient care that guides effective pain management. Although patient self reports provides an accurate measure of pain, a pain assessment tool can facilitate detection of pain among patients who are unable to verbalise the existence of pain due to various reasons. Patients who have undergone major abdominal surgery in Zambia are such type of patients who may be hindered to self report pain and this is mainly due to cultural factors. Having a developed tool would thus be promote provision of quality nursing care related to pain.

Why is it important?

The developed post-operative pain assessment tool is very useful in standardizing the practice of assessing post-surgical pain following major abdominal surgery. The tool is useful to the nursing profession and the health care system as it will be able to speed up the provision of competent care,
