What is it about?

The Output Area Classification (OAC) available in England and based on census variables, was used to segment the population into social groups which were investigated for their utilization of critical care for a variety of conditions. For example, small areas rich in students are characterized by CCU care for drug overdose, etc. Social group rather than deprivation is a more precise method for locating areas of high utilization.

Why is it important?

Certain social groups with a particular ethnic composition or students have higher critical care utilization for particular conditions. Deprivation scores are a very poor proxy for the social group and are not suited to studies attempting to explain differences in utilization.

Perspectives

This study used the output area classification (OAC) which is produced by the Office for National Statistics based on Census data to locate very small areas with high critical care utilization. The use of the output area code avoids the use of postcode and maintains anonymity. Part of a longer series available at http://www.hcaf.biz/2010/Publications_Full.pdf
