What is it about?

Uses a running 12-month total to investigate a long time series of monthly data on all-cause mortality in England and Wales. Extended periods of higher than expected death can be discerned as can periods when influenza and another presumed infectious agent interact.

Why is it important?

A study of the trends in death in England shows times of unexpectedly high death and hence health care costs. The higher costs arise due to far higher hospital utilization in the last year of life.

Perspectives

This study raised the possibility that another infectious agent may be interacting with influenza to create periods of much higher than expected deaths.
