What is it about?

Up to the present, it has been assumed that medical admissions (and costs) roughly increased in line with demography, i.e. the ageing population. However, this study using small areas within Berkshire show evidence for step-like increases in medical admissions at roughly 2-year intervals.

Why is it important?

If demography or the ageing population is not the primary driver for increasing emergency admissions then current models are woefully incorrect and clear understanding is required regarding the real behaviour.

Perspectives
