What is it about?

An individuals lifetime utilization of acute care is concentrated in the last year of life. The ratio of admissions per death can therefore be a useful performance measure. Emergency admissions per death peak in Jul/Aug and show a distinct minimum in January. In England, the count of emergency admissions per death has been elevated by over 1.7 million same day emergency admissions. It would seem that growing medical admissions over time are making an increasing contribution to this ratio.

Why is it important?

The approach of death has a strong influence on hospital admission. It is estimated that between 55% to 75% of admissions/bed occupancy occur in the last year of life, irrespective of the age at death.
