What is it about?

NHS England published its review of urgent and emergency care in 2013 due to rising pressure on A&E and costs. They conducted a 'comprehensive' literature review but seemingly omitted to mention anything about bed occupancy is the single (and most researched) cause of poor A&E waiting time performance.

Why is it important?

High inpatient bed occupancy is the single most important cause of 'access block' in the emergency department.

Perspectives

How NHS England expected to reduce 'access block' in the ED without addressing bed occupancy I simply do not know. Obviously government agencies cannot often tell the the whole story, especially if it contradicts current health policy. Full series of studies at http://www.hcaf.biz/2010/Publications_Full.pdf
