What is it about?

An event centered around 2008 lead to simultaneous increases in GP referral, A&E attendance and emergency admissions across the whole UK. This study looks at the net change in A&E attendance by age band after subtracting demographic change. Age 20-29 showed no change while 10-19 showed minor increase. There was a general increase above age 30, especially for those aged 50-59 and 80-89.

Why is it important?

Step-like increases in health care activity are the norm rather than the exception. They have been ignored simply because they were not supposed to be there. Age-specificity is common during these steps, see http://www.hcaf.biz/2010/Publications_Full.pdf

Perspectives

Part of a longer series investigating a likely infectious basis for this unusual behavior, see http://www.hcaf.biz/2010/Publications_Full.pdf
