What is it about?
Everyone assumes that health care demand increases in roughly continuous trajectories. This study demonstrates a significant step-like increase in GP referral, along with age specificity. The mechanism behind this behavior is seemingly infectious in nature.

Why is it important?
Step-like changes in health care activity are very common but have been ignored because they are not supposed to be there. Maybe this is the reason that policies to contain rising health care costs are failing.
