What is it about?
This study investigated the average year-to-year volatility in hospital bed occupancy (as a proxy for costs) for different acute specialties. Mental illness, medicine and pediatrics contribute to the highest volatility in bed occupancy and hence costs. Analysis of admissions shows highest volatility is associated with females and ages 75+ and 15-59.

Why is it important?
The management of financial risk among NHS organisations in England is a taboo subject. The NHS is constantly blamed for financial 'failure' for issues over which it has very little real control.
