What is it about?
During 2008 there was an unexplained increase in both hospital medical admissions and all-cause mortality. In this study, excess deaths associated with a hospital admission were examined to shed light on the conditions/diagnoses associated with the increase.

Why is it important?
No official explanation has ever been offered for the simultaneous increase in admissions and deaths in 2008. Similar events have repeated in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016, all without adequate explanation.
