What is it about?

The age standardized mortality rate fails to reflect the fact that it is the absolute number of deaths which drives the marginal changes in health care expenditure. This arises from the fact that the majority of a persons lifetime use of acute care occurs in the last year of life.

Why is it important?

As time progresses different areas will experience divergent trends in the total number of deaths.
