What is it about?
Between 1987 and 2009 the waiting time for an inpatient elective admission showed a series of cycles which were related to a series of financial crises.

Why is it important?
More recent research has revealed that the cycles arise from a series of mysterious infectious outbreaks during which both deaths and medical admissions increase. It is the costs associated with these outbreaks that created the recurring series of financial crises which led to the cycles in waiting time.
