What is it about?

Health care activity and costs are supposed to increase in a roughly linear way. However data from the USA, Canada and the UK all show recurring patterns of high/low behavior.

Why is it important?

Current financial models do not allow for cyclic behavior of health care activity and cost. Our hidden assumptions around the way activity and costs are supposed to behave are seemingly wrong.

Perspectives

Part of a longer series of papers investigating why emergency medical admissions and costs behave in ways that defy current opinion on how they are supposed to behave, see http://www.hcaf.biz/2010/Publications_Full.pdf
