What is it about?
Data from New Zealand is used to demonstrate that the gender ratio for hospital admissions show systematic up/down steps over time. These steps occur when there is an outbreak of a presumed novel type of infectious agent.

Why is it important?
Obviously there will be some movement in the gender ratio in each diagnosis/condition due to statistical randomness, however, these changes are higher than expected from randomness and occur at a common time between countries.
Perspectives
Part of a far longer series investigating outbreaks of a presumed infectious agent which appears to lead to higher female admissions across a range of conditions, see http://www.hcaf.biz/2010/Publications_Full.pdf
