What is it about?
The HRG tariff is used in the English NHS to pay for activity conducted by providers. Beyond as certain length of stay (the trim point) providers are paid on a per day basis. However, a serious flaw in the HRGs means that the costs and length of stay within each HRG is HIGHLY specialty dependent.

Why is it important?
The specialty dependency of HRGs means that they create considerable financial imbalance depending on the size and complexity of the provider.
Perspectives
Vast deficiencies within the HRG tariff have never been openly discussed with the NHS. This has prevented the development of a more rational tariff. Part of a longer series, see http://www.hcaf.biz/2010/Publications_Full.pdf
