What is it about?
This study looks at why Indonesian teenagers start smoking. We examined factors like age, gender, exposure to smokers at home, school, and public places, as well as friends’ influence and media messages. Our findings show which influences make teens more likely to try cigarettes, helping guide prevention efforts.

Why is it important?
Our study shows that multiple factors, including age, gender, peer influence, parental and teacher smoking, and exposure to tobacco in public spaces, can predict when Indonesian teenagers start smoking. This is important because it highlights specific targets for prevention programs and policies to reduce youth smoking rates.
Perspectives
Working on this article was eye-opening because it allowed me to explore the real-life factors that influence teenagers to start smoking in Indonesia. I hope it encourages parents, teachers, and policymakers to take concrete actions in preventing early smoking initiation and sparks broader conversations about youth health and tobacco control.
