What is it about?
This study explores why Indonesian teenagers start smoking and what factors influence their decision. Using data from 9,655 teenagers in the 2019 Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS), we examined age, gender, pocket money, exposure to smoke in public places, anti-tobacco media, and the influence of parents, teachers, and friends. The findings show that teen boys are at higher risk, and exposure to smoking in public places and peer influence plays a big role. Lack of anti-tobacco education also increases the chance of smoking initiation. This research highlights the need for better policies to protect young people from smoking and prevent early addiction.

Why is it important?
Smoking is a major health problem in Indonesia, and many teenagers start at a young age, making it harder to quit later. Understanding why they start smoking can help create better prevention programs, such as stronger anti-smoking campaigns, stricter policies on cigarette sales, and more education in schools. Preventing smoking initiation can save lives and improve public health.
Perspectives
This study is a crucial step in understanding why Indonesian teenagers start smoking and how prevention efforts can be strengthened. Family, friends, and the environment play significant roles, emphasizing the need for early intervention at home, in schools, and within communities. Stricter tobacco policies, improved anti-smoking education, and greater parental awareness are essential measures to reduce smoking initiation. Immediate action can help prevent lifelong addiction and contribute to a healthier future for the next generation.
