What is it about?
We often think that we make important decisions in our lives by collecting and sorting out relevant information. This may be the case for some topics but not for others. In this diary study, we showed that the decision on how we relate to our parents is less a matter of collecting and sorting out relevant information and more a matter of what emotions arise from the related experiences

Why is it important?
Our results show that sometimes it is more important to be open to how one feels about relationships than to collect and sort out information.
Perspectives
This study came too early in history. Back then diary studies were rare; now such studies are more frequent. Still, the topic of identity and emotions remains largely untouched.
