What is it about?

Muslim women have largely been portrayed as passive victims in Western media. The Arab Spring showed a dramatic activism of women in the Muslim world that attracted a lot of attention in the West, in particular the news media. This study is a content analysis of still images of Muslim women during the Arab Spring that compares visual framing of these women on CNN with Al-Jazeera.

Why is it important?

Comparing to the coverage of Muslim women in western media before the Arab Spring, this study found a significant change in the portrayal of Muslim women in Western media. In the Arab Spring, Muslim women were framed as more powerful, active, and visible, unlike the pre-Arab Spring years that they were portrayed as weak, passive, and predominantly veiled.

Perspectives

To my knowledge, this is the first study that quantitatively compares visual images of Muslim women in the Western vs. Middle Eastern news media.
